The Benefits of Acupuncture in Physiotherapy

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the many techniques used within physiotherapy as part of an integrated approach to treat both pain and inflammation.

Ultra-fine, single-use, pre-sterilised disposable needles of varying widths, lengths and materials that pierce the skin, are inserted into specific acupuncture points to enhance the body’s ability to manage pain, reduce inflammation and increase its healing capacity, this in turn aids recovery and promotes rehabilitation.

Benefits of Acupuncture

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that acupuncture safely treats a wide range of common health problems by stimulating the brain and spinal cord to produce NATURAL pain relieving chemicals, such as;

- endorphins;
- melatonin to promote sleep;
- serotonin to promote well being

These assist the body’s natural healing process and provide pain relief.

Conditions that can be treated with Acupuncture:

- Sports Injuries
- Back Pain
- Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy
- Whiplash
- Neck Pain
- Headaches / Migraines
- Tennis Elbow
- Achilles Tendinopathy
- Osteo-Arthritis
- Joint Pain

Treatment and what to expect?

During your first visit you will be asked about your current symptoms and medical history.  Based on all the information you have given, the practitioner will put together a treatment plan.

Because energy meridians range across the whole body, the points used are not necessarily close to where you experience pain or discomfort.  For example, if you suffer from headaches needles might be inserted in your foot or hand.

“Acupuncture has been very beneficial for me.  I have Beckers Muscular Dystrophy and began to suffer with lower back pain a few years ago.  Natalie suggested trying acupuncture which I was sceptical about at first but was willing to try anything.  Since then I have found it to be the best treatment for pain relief and stiffness.  I also find it to be very relaxing and stress free.  Would highly recommend this to anyone in pain!”  David Taphouse
